The Fund for Indigenous Rights and the Environment (F.I.R.E.) is a Private Foundation established in 2005 by David Rodman Titcomb. F.I.R.E. is managed by...

The mission of F.I.R.E. is to provide strategic and financial support for:
- Indigenous human rights,
- Self-determination,
- Community and ecological health,
- Cultural and environmental protection of Indigenous lands, and
- Preservation of related intact ecosystems and wilderness.

Native organizations currently face a relative void in funding for their efforts to protect their communities, their culture, and their lands. In helping to fill this void we believe that Indigenous communities themselves hold the experience and wisdom necessary to determine the needs and priorities for lasting social and environmental change. With this understanding we are committed to a strategic grantmaking model that is informed by the specific social, cultural, political, and economic needs of Indigenous communities.

The Fund for Indigenous Rights and the Environment was founded in Alaska and our work has thus been initiated with a special commitment to supporting Alaska Native communities. We plan to eventually expand the scope of our grantmaking to support Indigenous communities on a national and international level. In launching F.I.R.E., inaugral grants totalling $65,000 were made to support a range of outstanding Indigenous initiatives in Alaska. You can read about our success stories in the Past Recipients page.
